The medical costs associated with violence against children in Fiji were estimated to exceed $19.33 million in 2019, according to a survey led by UNICEF. This study found that $7.66 million of the total was allocated specifically for treating injuries sustained from such violence.

The report highlights that a range of health risks—including communicable diseases, nutritional deficiencies, and infectious and parasitic diseases—are significantly linked to injuries among children who experience abuse. The data suggests that violence against children accounts for approximately 14.14% of all injuries reported among children in Fiji.

In detail, the breakdown of the substantial medical costs indicates that $9.01 million was spent on non-communicable diseases, alongside $2.61 million for infectious and parasitic diseases, while spending on reproductive health and nutrition was negligible.

The study also assessed the repercussions of childhood violence based on gender. For males, childhood physical violence notably increased the likelihood of issues related to substance use, mental health disorders, and self-harm. Conversely, females who experienced physical violence showed similar risks, indicating a wide-ranging impact on both genders—and emphasizing the urgent need for intervention.

While this report reveals concerning statistics, it also serves as a vital foundation for improving child protection policies and health services in Fiji. By acknowledging the financial burden of violence against children, communities and authorities can prioritize resources and strategies aimed at prevention and healing.

In summary, the significant financial impact of violence against children reflects a broader public health crisis that requires attention and action. There is a hopeful path forward, as raising awareness and implementing effective prevention strategies can help reduce the burden of violence on children’s health, ultimately fostering safer environments for future generations.
