In anticipation of the 2025 FMF Hibiscus Festival, Suva City Council chief executive officer Tevita Boseiwaqa is aiming to restore the event’s original purpose by ensuring widespread community involvement. Previously criticized for becoming overly commercialized, Mr. Boseiwaqa believes the festival should return to its roots as an inclusive event designed for the enjoyment of all.
Reflecting on the festival’s successful elements from past years, Mr. Boseiwaqa noted, “What was done at that time that attracted so many people?” He highlighted the night ball that happened after the crowning as one of the popular events that will make a return in the coming year. The goal is to make the festival bigger and more inclusive, ensuring that nobody is left out.
The current year’s preparations have attracted business communities, vendors, and residents who have booked stalls, underscoring the festival’s community appeal. Mr. Boseiwaqa emphasized the importance of strengthening organizational gaps with the involvement of experienced individuals from previous festivals. This year marks the festival’s second occurrence after a five-year hiatus, making robust preparations vital.
Drawing on the experience of past Hibiscus queens, fashion designers, and other business operators has proved advantageous in planning this year’s event. Mr. Boseiwaqa stated, “The preparation so far is going on well, especially strengthening the gaps with experienced people we have brought in. This was not done last year, so we are trying to fill in gaps and strengthen areas.” Such efforts are aimed at elevating the festival to its full potential, reflecting its historic charm and community significance.
The Hibiscus Festival, known for its role in fostering cultural unity and community spirit, has historically been a significant event in Fiji. With support from sponsors like FMF Limited and local businesses, the festival continues to promote inclusivity and cultural appreciation. By highlighting community involvement and enhancing the festival’s traditional elements, the Council hopes to enliven the experience for attendees, making it a true celebration of Fijian unity and diversity.
