The Fiji Men’s Development team narrowly missed out on victory in the final of the 2024 Oceania 7s tournament held in Honiara, Solomon Islands, suffering a 17-12 defeat to Samoa in extra time on Sunday.
Samoa got off to a strong start, leading 5-0 at halftime. They increased their advantage shortly into the second half; however, Fiji rallied with determination, managing to equalize thanks to a try from Iosefo Namoce. Unfortunately, Solomoni Rauqe’s conversion attempt went astray, resulting in the match progressing to extra time instead of a Fiji triumph.
In the extra period, Samoa secured the decisive score right after the match resumed, clinching the championship. Additionally, Tonga secured third place by overcoming Tuvalu 24-19 in their own extra time thriller.
This close matchup highlights the competitive spirit and talent present in Pacific island rugby, showcasing the promising future for the Fiji team. With such resilient performances, Fiji’s young players are gaining invaluable experience that will serve them well in future tournaments. The ongoing development of these athletes bodes well for the national team’s prospects on the international stage.
