Fiji's Cardiac Care Revolution: Local Patient Triumphs with Quadruple Bypass Surgery

Fiji’s Heart Health Revolution: A Life-Saving Milestone

Avikash Chand, a resident of Nausori, has made a significant milestone in his recovery by becoming the second patient in Fiji to successfully undergo quadruple graft heart bypass surgery. This advanced procedure took place at the Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH) Hospital in Nadi on February 25, performed by a distinguished team led by cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Sanjeev Khulbey, who has three decades of experience in the medical field.

Chand, a 50-year-old photojournalist, shared his profound appreciation for the PSH team, crediting their timely assistance and special discounts with making his surgery possible shortly after he experienced a major heart attack in November. He highlighted the stress-free organization of his surgery, stating, “Within a week, everything was arranged for my surgery…if it was not for the timely assistance and special discounts offered to me, this surgery would not have been possible.”

The operations at PSH from February 23 to 28 mark a significant era for local cardiac care, showcasing the health facility’s increasing capabilities. Initially considering treatment abroad, Chand was encouraged to stay local after hearing positive feedback about PSH, remarking, “I could be treated far better here in Nadi at a fraction of the cost and convenience for my family members.”

Prior successful surgeries, including a triple graft performed on January 14, underline PSH’s dedication to expanding its surgical offerings. Parvish Kumar, the founder of PSH, reiterated their mission to provide world-class medical services that remain affordable for local residents, highlighting the hospital’s pivotal role in enhancing healthcare access in Fiji.

The successful surgery not only exemplifies the advancements in medical services available within Fiji but also instills hope for patients needing essential treatments close to home. This progressive shift towards improved healthcare infrastructure offers promising opportunities for better health outcomes while alleviating the financial burden often associated with medical travel.
