President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu has emphasized the Fijian government’s commitment to enhancing healthcare access for all citizens, prioritizing policies focused on healthcare and education as the new Parliament year begins. In his address, he stated that the government is exploring the recruitment of foreign health workers to address critical shortages in the health sector.

Ratu Naiqama acknowledged that the healthcare delivery system requires a thorough overhaul, noting ongoing rehabilitation efforts and improvements in public medical facilities. Among these efforts is the modernization of divisional hospitals with advanced diagnostic equipment. He highlighted significant improvements in facilities, pointing to recent renovations that have addressed long-standing issues, including operational problems at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital.

Partnerships with development allies like Australia and India are pivotal to the advancement of Fiji’s healthcare infrastructure. The Indian government is set to construct a 100-bed super specialty hospital, marking a substantial step forward in enhancing public health services.

To further strengthen healthcare, the government has announced plans for legislative reforms, including a review of the Nursing Act and the introduction of new frameworks for healthcare entities. Acknowledging the burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) on public health and the economy, Ratu Naiqama reiterated the government’s commitment to tackling these challenges comprehensively.

The Minister for Health, Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu, has previously stressed the urgent need to address healthcare infrastructure, human resources, and the quality of services. Strategies to retain healthcare professionals include raising retirement ages and increasing salaries, efforts that have already begun to show promise in curbing staff turnover.

The renewed efforts signal a hopeful shift towards a more resilient and accessible healthcare system in Fiji, demonstrating the government’s dedication to providing quality medical services and improving the health outcomes of its population. Through collaboration and innovative strategies, there is optimism for significant advancements in healthcare over the coming years.
