The Fijian government is making significant strides in enhancing the nation’s healthcare infrastructure through collaborative efforts with both local and international partners. In a recent parliamentary session, Assistant Finance Minister Esrom Immanuel announced the advancement of a new 305-bed hospital in Lautoka, which is being constructed in partnership with Aspen Medical. This development was highlighted during the opening of the 2025 parliamentary session following President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu’s address.
Minister Immanuel expressed optimism regarding the progress made in the health sector, noting that the Indian government has officially approved the construction of a new 100-bed super specialty hospital. The Indian technical team visited Fiji last week, with construction anticipated to begin within the next three to four months.
Moreover, plans are underway for the redevelopment of the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWM) in Suva. A comprehensive master plan has been finalized, outlining 27 sub-projects identified for implementation, with the Australian government contributing significant financial support for this initiative. Funding discussions are being held with the World Bank and Asian Development Bank, focusing on making CWM a leading regional referral hospital.
Immanuel emphasized that a holistic approach is being adopted, with investments prioritizing the enhancement of primary and preventive healthcare services throughout the country.
This collaborative initiative not only represents a substantial investment in the health sector but also signifies the government’s commitment to improving the overall healthcare system in Fiji. The ongoing partnerships with international organizations pave the way for a progressive and sustainable health infrastructure, offering hope for better health outcomes for the Fijian population.
