Fiji is on the path to becoming a premier hub for medical tourism in the Pacific, with notable contributions from the Indian government, according to Indian High Commissioner Suneet Mehta. During a recent visit to Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH) in Nadi, Mehta expressed optimism about the potential collaborations to elevate healthcare services in both Fiji and the broader Pacific region.

PSH, Fiji’s largest private specialty hospital with 130 beds, is at the forefront of this initiative. Mehta highlighted the Indian government’s willingness to partner in developing a 100-bed super-specialty hospital in Suva, which is expected to significantly enhance healthcare access for Fijians and medical tourists alike. This new hospital will provide specialized medical services that are urgently needed in the region.

Ritesh Kumar, operations manager at PSH, emphasized local collaboration’s importance in making this ambitious project a success. He stated that PSH has the requisite experience and resources to work alongside the Indian government, thus paving the way for a robust healthcare framework.

Furthermore, PSH is actively engaged in health awareness campaigns through various media platforms and plans to undertake outreach programs in schools. These initiatives aim to equip students with essential life-saving skills, indicating a proactive approach to future healthcare education in Fiji.

In addition to these efforts, Mehta underscored the vital role of medical insurance in fostering the development of private healthcare services in Fiji. By making medical coverage a requirement for employers, the government can ensure that more individuals have access to healthcare, promoting both equity and growth in the sector.

This initiative resonates with previous reports stating Fiji’s ambition to attract medical tourists by providing high-quality healthcare at lower costs compared to neighboring countries. The establishment of PSH further aligns with broader efforts by the Fijian government to enhance healthcare infrastructure and encourage private investment with incentives such as tax concessions and duty-free imports for medical equipment.

Overall, the ongoing developments in Fiji’s healthcare sector, particularly in medical tourism, signal a bright future. With strong international collaborations, increased access to specialized care, and a commitment to quality services, Fiji stands poised to emerge as a competitive destination for medical travelers from Australia, New Zealand, and beyond. This movement not only aims to boost local healthcare standards but also supports the country’s economy through enhanced tourism opportunities.
