Fiji’s Healthcare Gets a Boost from Kiwi Volunteers

A new memorandum of understanding has been signed between the Ministry of Health and Medical Services and Youth with a Mission (YWAM) New Zealand, enabling volunteer medical professionals from New Zealand to provide services in Fiji’s maritime and rural regions.

The Minister for Health, Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu, informed Parliament that the 10-year MOU was approved by the Cabinet on August 4 and August 7. Dr. Lalabalavu highlighted that this partnership aims to enhance service delivery and work towards universal health coverage for hard-to-reach populations, particularly in rural and maritime areas of Fiji.

The volunteer teams will operate from their ship to deliver primary healthcare services, including health awareness, screenings, and dental care. Dr. Lalabalavu emphasized the importance of evolving processes related to registration, procurement, and customs for these volunteer teams.

He expressed gratitude for the continuous partnership, which has persisted through different government administrations, noting its significance in providing critical primary healthcare in the island regions.

When questioned about possibly waiving the temporary registration fees required by the Fiji Medical and Dental Council for these volunteer doctors, nurses, and dentists who offer their services for free, Dr. Lalabalavu indicated that the Ministry would explore this option. He mentioned that many of the same visiting teams return annually, indicating a pattern that would be considered when assessing how best to support the volunteers.
