Fiji is facing significant challenges in retaining healthcare workers, with a notable trend of professionals leaving for better opportunities abroad. Dr. Rigamoto Taito, General Manager of Aspen Medical, has highlighted that the core issue is in human resources, pointing out that many healthcare workers are seeking what she termed “greener pastures.” She emphasized the urgent need to create an environment that encourages them to remain in the country.

The challenge is exacerbated by limited funding for healthcare services, which often results in the sector being sidelined in favor of other national priorities. Issues such as limited career growth, unsatisfactory work conditions, and diminished job satisfaction have driven many health professionals to seek employment outside of Fiji.

Despite these difficulties, Dr. Taito remains optimistic, asserting that targeted investment and better support could substantially strengthen the healthcare system. This optimism resonates with ongoing government efforts mentioned by Health Minister Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu, who noted that measures like increasing the retirement age for healthcare workers, rectifying salary disparities, and implementing salary increases are beginning to show results.

Earlier reports confirm this trend, with a reduction in resignation rates observed this fiscal year compared to alarming figures in previous years. The introduction of initiatives aimed at enhancing job satisfaction and retention have been crucial in this shift.

To address the current shortage, which includes over 800 nursing positions unfilled, the government is also focusing on recruiting additional nursing interns. Furthermore, initiatives aimed at improving financial compensation and working conditions are being rolled out, reflecting a proactive approach to combating the ongoing workforce crisis.

While the healthcare sector in Fiji faces challenges, there are optimistic signs that strategic interventions are paving the way for a more stable and effective healthcare workforce. With ongoing commitments to improvement, the potential for redesigned healthcare services that better serve the needs of the population appears promising.
