The Fiji Medical Association has highlighted that the difficulties faced by Fijians in accessing healthcare—such as long wait times, medication shortages, and limited resources—stem from deep-rooted systemic challenges rather than a lack of effort from healthcare workers. Association President Dr. Alipate Vakamocea emphasized that these issues impact everyone reliant on these services.
The current public healthcare system is experiencing significant strain due to outdated facilities, inadequate medical supplies, and an increasing prevalence of non-communicable diseases, including diabetes, along with a worrying rise in new HIV cases, aggravated by unsafe practices linked to drug use.
Despite these challenges, healthcare professionals continue to work diligently under resource limitations, striving to provide quality care. Dr. Vakamocea called on all Fijians to take part in improving health outcomes by adopting healthier lifestyles, which could alleviate some pressure on the healthcare system. Simple changes like nutritious eating, regular exercise, avoiding substance abuse, and prioritizing preventive care can lead to better individual health and less strain on healthcare resources.
Furthermore, the Association encourages fostering understanding and respect for healthcare providers, who face numerous challenges in their roles. Instead of placing blame, they advocate for a collaborative approach to find solutions. While acknowledging the government’s transparency regarding these issues, Dr. Vakamocea urged that timely responses are essential to enhance the health system and mitigate suffering. He stressed that an improved healthcare system requires a united effort from the government, healthcare workers, and the public.
This call for a community-focused approach highlights the potential for positive change through collective responsibility and individual commitment. With a focus on preventive health measures and empathetic engagement with healthcare professionals, the prospects for a more robust healthcare system in Fiji look promising. By working together and supporting one another, there is hope for a healthier future for all Fijians.
