Up to one-third of healthcare facilities in Fiji currently lack a reliable and safe water supply, as highlighted by Jonathan Veitch, a representative from UNICEF. This alarming situation necessitates that some patients bring their own water to hospitals, which poses risks to mothers, newborns, and other vulnerable individuals. Veitch emphasized that it is unacceptable for mothers to give birth in institutions without access to clean water.

During the commissioning ceremony for the Water and Sanitation Hygiene (WASH) Improvement initiative at Nayavuira Nursing Station in Ra, Veitch shared that a collaborative effort has been underway since 2023, led by the Ministry of Health and Medical Services, to ensure equitable healthcare access for every individual in Fiji. Over the course of the two-year project, nine healthcare facilities in the Western Division, including Nayavuira Nursing Station, have received much-needed upgrades. These facilities are now equipped with improved WASH services that are cleaner, safer, and more resilient to climate change.

Veitch reaffirmed UNICEF’s commitment to supporting healthcare workers by providing the necessary resources to ensure that children receive the best possible healthcare services. These enhancements not only improve the immediate conditions of healthcare facilities but also serve as a vital step toward fostering a healthier, more resilient Fiji.

This ongoing improvement in water and sanitation infrastructure signifies hope for better health outcomes across communities, highlighting the significance of access to clean water in healthcare settings. It underscores a broader commitment, aligned with similar projects across the nation, focusing on delivering high-quality health services, especially in rural and underserved areas.

In summary, while challenges remain in ensuring reliable access to safe water in healthcare facilities, the initiatives initiated by the government and supported by organizations like UNICEF show promise for significant advancements in public health and community well-being in Fiji.
