Fiji’s Healthcare Crisis: Doctor Exodus Raises Alarm

A total of 280 medical officers have resigned from Fiji’s Ministry of Health between 2022 and 2023, leading to a shortage of senior specialist doctors in the country. This year alone, 15 doctors have already left their positions.

Dr. Basharat Munshi, the outgoing President of the Fiji Medical Association, shared these statistics at the association’s 63rd annual conference at the Hilton Resort on Saturday. He expressed concern about the seniority of the doctors who are resigning. “We have trained doctors who are specialists. The loss of such skilled professionals is detrimental to us,” Dr. Munshi stated.

He pointed out that many departing doctors have transitioned to the private sector, indicating a notable exodus during the past two years. Dr. Munshi emphasized the need for the Ministry of Health to conduct a survey aimed at identifying the factors influencing doctors’ departures.

Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu, the Minister for Health, recognized the impact of this trend on healthcare delivery in both primary health settings and major hospitals. However, he mentioned that the rate of resignations has decreased this year. “We cannot compete with the pull factors. It is essential to improve working conditions, remuneration, and to listen to their concerns over time,” Dr. Lalabalavu said.

He added that enhancing infrastructure is important, but human resources are equally vital for providing quality healthcare. Addressing both the push and pull factors influencing doctors’ employment decisions remains crucial.
