The Ministry of Health in Fiji is actively addressing concerns highlighted by the Fiji Labour Party regarding Tavua Hospital. Party Leader Mahendra Chaudhry has raised alarms over urgent maintenance issues, including the deteriorating state of the hospital’s toilets, the limited capacity of its mortuary, and significant shortages of medicines and medical supplies in the dispensary.
In response, the Ministry has recognized the necessity of immediate repairs, especially to the hospital’s ablution facilities, and is currently engaging contractors to undertake these repairs within this financial year. The Ministry also noted that the ongoing dengue outbreak in the Western Division has been straining both outpatient and inpatient services at Tavua Hospital as well as other local medical facilities. They have urged the public to remain patient as health measures are implemented to manage mosquito populations and lessen the strain on health services.
While acknowledging occasional challenges in medicine availability, the Ministry is committed to ensuring that Tavua Hospital and other medical facilities remain well-stocked. They have expressed concern that negative public comments regarding these issues could discourage people from seeking necessary medical care and have stressed the importance of utilizing local healthcare services.

Recently, Dr. Basharat Munshi, president of the Fiji Medical Association, pointed to a critical shortage of hospital beds and the exorbitant costs required to improve medical infrastructure, estimating an investment of approximately $4.6 billion to support the growing population.
