Fiji’s healthcare system is facing pressing challenges related to the accessibility of essential medications. Member of Parliament Rinesh Rajesh Sharma has advocated for 24/7 operation of hospital pharmacies, underscoring the life-threatening delays that patients encounter when pharmacies are closed at night. In a recent interview, he cited instances where patients in emergency departments must wait for medications, only to be directed to nearby towns, where late-night pharmacy options are scarce. He expressed his concern about the potential consequences of these wait times, linking it to tragic outcomes, including a young boxer’s death due to delays in medical attention.
Despite Mr. Sharma’s calls for reform, Assistant Health Minister for Health Penioni Ravunawa disagreed, arguing that the demand during after-hours is minimal, noting that less than ten patients typically require service. He maintained that the current system is efficient, as pharmacies already provide sufficient medication supplies to endure overnight waits.
The discussion around pharmacy accessibility parallels the broader issues surrounding medicine shortages highlighted by health experts and previous reports regarding Fiji’s healthcare procurement problems. The Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Services (FPBS) has reported ongoing challenges in sourcing quality medications, largely due to supplier failures and bureaucratic delays. Experts emphasize the critical need for reforms in the procurement processes to ensure that all citizens have reliable access to vital medications.
The ongoing situation sheds light on a systemic issue that not only threatens patient safety but also calls for urgent change. There is, however, a kernel of hope that through continued advocacy and the acknowledgment of healthcare deficiencies, pathways to meaningful reforms can emerge, ultimately enhancing the delivery and accessibility of healthcare services across Fiji. With collaboration between government entities and stakeholders, there’s potential for a more resilient healthcare system to develop, ensuring that all Fijians receive timely medical attention when they need it most.
