The surge in viral illnesses in Fiji is exerting considerable pressure on healthcare facilities, particularly the Colonial War Memorial (CWM) Hospital in Suva, which is facing an acute shortage of bed space. Health Ministry Permanent Secretary Dr. Jemesa Tudravu has confirmed that the rise in influenza-like illnesses has intensified the challenges surrounding patient accommodation.
Dr. Tudravu explained, “There’s always a need for additional bed space. We have beds, but we need bed space,” highlighting the ongoing capacity constraints. This has been accompanied by public outcry over hospital overcrowding, with some reports alleging patients have been asked to purchase their own wheelchairs—a claim Dr. Tudravu did not directly confirm but acknowledged the existing challenges in capacity.
Efforts are being made to coordinate patient transfers between CWM and other smaller health facilities to manage the load effectively. “We’re not only working with CWM but also our smaller facilities, ensuring that the very sick get the first chance, and we can keep rotating our patients,” he stated.
The situation at CWM is not isolated; it reflects a broader systemic issue across Fiji’s healthcare system. Previously, Dr. Basharat Munshi, the outgoing president of the Fiji Medical Association, raised concerns about a shortfall of approximately 2,000 hospital beds needed to adequately serve Fiji’s population of around 3,000. Ongoing challenges with operating theater availability limit the hospital’s ability to perform elective surgeries, which have been pushed aside in favor of emergency cases.
The financial implications of upgrading infrastructural deficits were also highlighted, as addressing these issues could require about $4.46 billion in investments. Despite the pressing concerns, there is optimism surrounding the redevelopment project for CWM, funded by Australia, which is reportedly progressing well. Dr. Tudravu noted that important phases of the project have been completed, and the next goal focuses on master planning, essential for the establishment of a new CWM Hospital.
This collaborative approach, bolstered by international aid and ongoing efforts to improve coordination and resource allocation, may pave the way for a healthier future for Fijians.
