The Fiji Pharmaceutical Society (FPS) has voiced strong opposition to the Ministry of Health and Medical Services’ decision to terminate outpatient pharmacy services at Lautoka and Ba hospitals. FPS President Priyanka Prasad raised serious concerns that this change could lead to significant disparities in access to medications, particularly for vulnerable groups, including the elderly and low- to middle-income individuals who rely on these services.

Prasad highlighted that many patients are already experiencing confusion and increased difficulty in obtaining necessary medications that are not available through the Free Medicine Program (FMP). The FPS cautioned that the fragmentation of services could lead to weakened communication between clinicians and pharmacists, increasing the risk of medication errors and further treatment delays. “Patients are facing substantial difficulty and delays procuring medicines that are not available through FMP,” Prasad stated.

Furthermore, the FPS emphasized that the discontinuation of these services at public hospitals jeopardizes treatment continuity, thereby worsening health outcomes for those already dealing with chronic conditions. They strongly urge the immediate reinstatement of outpatient pharmacy services for patients not enrolled in the FMP at both hospitals.

This latest move aligns with the broader context of ongoing discussions about Fiji’s healthcare system, which has been plagued with significant challenges related to the accessibility of essential medications. The Fiji Medical Association (FMA) has previously criticized the Ministry’s decision as “shocking,” noting that the change could disproportionately affect already vulnerable populations.

In light of these evolving circumstances, and despite the challenges posed by medication shortages and service disruptions, there remains optimism that continued dialogue between health authorities and organizations like the FPS and FMA could pave the way for reform and improved healthcare access for all Fijians. Stakeholders hope that by addressing these systemic issues, the healthcare system can be enhanced to ensure that every citizen receives timely and effective medical care.
