Fiji’s healthcare system is currently facing significant challenges, with primary facilities described as overstretched, under-resourced, and unevenly staffed, according to Ratu Suliano Matanitobua, deputy chairman of the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC). He raised these concerns prior to the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH) Foundation, emphasizing that urgent action is needed to address the mounting pressure on healthcare services.

Ratu Suliano pointed out that the Colonial War Memorial Hospital and others are operating close to full capacity, with alarming statistics indicating that one public health nurse may cover up to 30,000 people in urban areas. This uncomfortable reality could lead to a dramatic increase in national health expenditure, projected to be more than 2.5 times current spending per capita by 2050, a situation Ratu Suliano deemed unsustainable.

NCDs (non-communicable diseases) are a significant concern, accounting for an overwhelming 80% of all deaths in Fiji, with 64% of these fatalities occurring in working-age individuals. The economic implications are severe, with the annual cost of NCDs to Fiji estimated at around USD 260 million (FJD 591 million). He stressed the urgent need for action, stating, “We must act and we must act now.”

Fortunately, the partnership with the PSH offers a beacon of hope. The PSH, founded in 2016 and fully operated by Fijian staff, represents a model of resilience and innovation within the local healthcare landscape. Ratu Suliano commended the leadership of PSH founder Parvish Kumar, advocating for investment in local talent to improve healthcare services.

This partnership between the GCC and PSH signifies a proactive effort to alleviate the stresses on Fiji’s healthcare system. Prior similar articles have highlighted ongoing advancements made by PSH in healthcare, such as the implementation of advanced surgical services and telemedicine capabilities, designed to bridge healthcare gaps, especially in remote areas.

The collaboration represents a critical step forward in enhancing healthcare services throughout Fiji, promising improved access to quality care, increased health awareness, and bolstering economic growth through health tourism. With continued efforts and investment in healthcare infrastructure, there is a positive outlook for a healthier Fiji, paving the way for better health outcomes for all citizens.
