The healthcare system in Fiji is reportedly in significant distress, as highlighted by Opposition MP Premila Kumar during a parliamentary debate. Despite an increase in the healthcare budget, Kumar argued that the situation is deteriorating due to various factors, including staffing shortages and misallocated funds.
She expressed concern over the lack of support for newly graduated nurses, who are facing six-month delays in finding employment, while existing staff members are overburdened. Kumar pointed out that the availability of midwives is critically low, with only 200 midwives catering to 300,000 women of childbearing age. The issue has intensified since 500 midwives left Fiji last year, and only 50 new midwives are trained annually with Australian sponsorship, without any commitment to remain in the country.
In addition to staffing challenges, Kumar criticized the underutilization of the current health budget, noting that significant portions of the allocated funds for staff quarters, Labasa Hospital upgrades, and equipment procurement went unspent. She further emphasized that despite increasing mental health issues, the budget for St Giles Psychiatric Hospital has been reduced.
In response, Finance Minister Biman Prasad countered Kumar’s assertions, accusing her and the Opposition of neglecting their own administration’s shortcomings. He pointed out that both parties face similar public grievances and urged leaders to acknowledge past mistakes for the betterment of the healthcare system.
Prasad defended the government’s current health budget, which now represents 4 percent of the GDP, approaching the World Health Organization’s recommendation of 4.5 percent. He reiterated the government’s commitment to address healthcare challenges, underlining their initiative for a comprehensive review of the healthcare sector.
