The inaugural Interventional Nephrology Pacific Outreach in Fiji has been recognized as a significant success. This week-long initiative introduced critical interventional procedures, including peripheral and central vein angioplasties, which were previously unavailable in Fiji and most parts of the Pacific region.
During the program’s closing ceremony, Minister for Women Sashi Kiran expressed her heartfelt appreciation to the group of visiting Australian medical specialists. Kiran underscored the importance of these treatments, stating they are essential for patients relying on hemodialysis, providing much-needed hope to those who previously had limited options for maintaining life-sustaining vascular access. This endeavor marked a groundbreaking moment for Fiji as it became the first time such critical medical procedures were performed locally, potentially saving lives.
In addition to patient care, the outreach also placed emphasis on empowering local healthcare workers through practical training and collaborative knowledge-sharing. Kiran also highlighted the government’s Free Medical Scheme, which ensures eligible individuals, especially the elderly and vulnerable, receive complimentary consultations, medications, and diagnostic services at participating private clinics.

Similar initiatives have been noted across the region, such as the efforts by Dr. Amrish Krishnan, a Fijian nephrologist currently training in Australia, who hopes to enhance renal care in Fiji upon his return.
