Fiji has officially transitioned from a Low Middle-Income Country to a High Middle-Income Country, as announced in a recent Health Sector Review Report 2024 by the World Bank. Despite this economic progress, health indicators across the nation have remained stagnant over the past decade, spotlighting a concerning gap between economic growth and health outcomes.

Fiji’s Minister for Health, Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu, pointed out that even with rising income levels, the country’s health metrics have stagnated or declined when compared to other nations in similar economic categories. To address this pressing issue, the ministry is prioritizing a significant overhaul of health services, with a strong emphasis on Primary Health Care (PHC).

Dr. Lalabalavu remarked on the collaborative efforts underway, stating, “The Ministry is working with several partners, including the Ministry of Finance and the World Bank, to modernize health facilities supporting a transformed Primary Health Care service for our population.” The role of PHC is critical, particularly in tackling major health challenges like non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and persistent infectious diseases.

Echoing these sentiments, Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, the Permanent Secretary for Health, noted that Fiji’s health indicators are more aligned with those of lower-income countries. He pointed to the ongoing challenges presented by NCDs and diseases sensitive to climate change, magnified by the recent COVID-19 pandemic, which has also contributed to a shortage of healthcare professionals.

The World Bank report emphasizes the need for advancements in digital health initiatives, the establishment of integrated hospital networks, and the promotion of healthier lifestyle choices to holistically approach health reform. The growth of the private health sector over the last decade offers a valuable opportunity to supplement public healthcare initiatives, particularly in enhancing medical diagnostics and local health product supply chains.

As Fiji embarks on this essential transformation, the cooperation between public and private sectors marks a significant move towards improved health outcomes. With strategic reforms and investments in the healthcare system, there is optimism that Fiji can achieve meaningful advancements in health, benefiting the overall well-being and economic stability of its population.
