Recent reports indicate that Fiji’s health infrastructure has suffered significant damage due to the impact of the 20 cyclones that struck the country from 2010 to 2022. The newly introduced Fiji Health Adaptation Plan (FHAP) 2024 – 2030 outlines the ongoing risks to health facilities posed by climate-induced disasters.
The FHAP highlights the vulnerability of both the population and health systems to increasingly frequent extreme weather events. Notably, 16 health facilities were reported to have sustained severe damage from these storms, with three still awaiting reconstruction. Alarmingly, about 90 percent of Fiji’s population resides in coastal areas, where 41 percent of healthcare facilities are located within 500 meters of the shoreline, and at least 27 facilities are situated within just 100 meters of the coast.
This newly launched FHAP is a proactive response by the Ministry of Health to address the adverse long-term effects of climate change on health services over the next six years. The plan builds upon prior initiatives, specifically the Climate Change and Health Strategic Action Plan (CCHSAP), and recognizes the need for a more integrated approach to tackle the cross-cutting impacts of climate change.
The FHAP embraces a comprehensive strategy to enhance climate resilience and environmental sustainability within the health sector. It includes 35 adaptation and mitigation actions that are designed to be integrated across the foundational elements of the health system, thereby promoting a unified response to climate challenges.
