The Minister for Health, Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu, emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing issues within the health sector. He highlighted the focus on infrastructure, human resources, quality services, and health financing as key areas of priority.

Dr. Atonio pointed out that the public health sector in Fiji shoulders the primary burden of health services, collaborating with the private sector to enhance the health and well-being of all Fijians.

To strengthen primary health care, the ministry is working with the World Health Organization and other partners to finalize a public health care strategy, which will clarify the roles and functions of primary health care at various levels. This approach is designed to tackle the significant disease burden from communicable illnesses and to enhance resilience in facilities across the country.

The Minister noted the endorsement and implementation of two critical national policies: the School Health Policy and the Early Childhood Development Policy. These aim to promote good health and healthy living among children.

In terms of infrastructure improvement, Dr. Atonio reported on various projects completed in the past year and a half, including upgrades to clinics, hospitals, staff quarters, and essential services. A notable addition is a new medical boat delivered to the Visoqo Nursing Station, enhancing outreach capabilities to coastal communities.

Dr. Atonio acknowledged the global shortage of healthcare workers, which has impacted Fiji as many professionals have left for opportunities abroad or moved to the private sector. In response, the government has implemented strategies such as raising the retirement age, addressing salary discrepancies, and approving salary increases for healthcare personnel.

He also mentioned the development of a new National Development Plan (NDP), which aims to provide a framework for Fiji’s development. The ministry intends to align its strategies with the NDP to build a resilient health system that leverages innovation and technology, thereby offering high-quality, evidence-based health services for the population.
