Fiji’s Health Revolution: A Village Leads the Way to Community-Centered Care

The Ministry of Health in Fiji marked a significant milestone recently by holding its second National Health Executives Committee (NHEC) meeting at the community level for the first time, specifically in the small village of Naveicovatu, Wainibuka. Health Minister Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu expressed pride in the village, which, despite its modest size and only ten households, has produced notable healthcare professionals, including three doctors and two nurses, contributing significantly to the local healthcare landscape.

This groundbreaking meeting aimed to foster greater community engagement in health discussions, shifting traditional practices from hotel venues to a more inclusive, community-centered approach. During the gathering, which featured an unveiling of a commemorative stone plaque, the minister highlighted the village’s historical significance, noting that it was home to the first doctor in the Wainibuka area.
