The Ministry of Health and Medical Services in Fiji is actively managing the country’s supply of intravenous (IV) fluids amid a significant global shortage affecting healthcare systems worldwide. To sustain the availability of these critical supplies, the Fiji Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Services (FPBS) is procuring IV fluids on a monthly basis, ensuring that stock levels do not dip below three months of supply, considered critical.

This ongoing shortage has been attributed to several factors, including manufacturing disruptions, unforeseen surges in demand, and complications in global supply chains. In response, FPBS has intensified efforts to source alternative IV fluid brands from both local and international suppliers, safeguarding the medical needs for over 220 healthcare facilities across the country.

To mitigate challenges from limited stocks, the Ministry of Health has enacted conservation strategies. These measures aim to maximize the use of available IV fluids while maintaining patient care standards. Health authorities are keenly monitoring developments in the global market and adjusting local procurement strategies as necessary to ensure hospitals and clinics are adequately supplied.

In previous discussions, Health Minister Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu emphasized that Fiji has successfully secured substantial quantities of IV fluids, including an advance procurement of approximately 350,000 units for 2025. This proactive approach assures the population that, while global shortages may persist, the nation is taking substantial steps to prevent any domestic shortages.

Additionally, the Ministry is exploring long-term solutions, such as incentivizing local production of IV fluids, to bolster supply resilience and reduce reliance on international markets. Such initiatives also hold the potential for significant reforms in Fiji’s healthcare procurement framework, thereby enhancing the overall robustness of the healthcare system.

This ongoing effort not only addresses immediate challenges but positions Fiji’s healthcare system for improved future stability. With a focus on effective collaboration among health stakeholders, there is cautious optimism that these actions can lead to sustained health improvements for the Fijian population, ensuring that essential medical resources are readily available when needed.
