The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has officially entered discussions regarding amendments to the concession agreement with Health Care Fiji (Pte) Ltd, marking a significant step in the negotiating process. Health Minister Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu expressed gratitude for the ministry’s involvement, noting that it has been excluded from similar negotiations in the past.

“This time, the Ministry of Health is involved in the actual drafting of the new agreement, and we are very thankful for that,” Dr. Lalabalavu stated. He emphasized the importance of the ministry’s participation as a significant stakeholder in the public-private partnership (PPP), highlighting that its prior absence in negotiations had been a notable oversight.

The minister mentioned that the ministry is actively contributing its input on how the new agreement should be structured. While further details will be revealed upon finalization of the agreement, Dr. Lalabalavu assured that the ministry’s involvement will lead to a focus on protecting health service delivery for the population.

He also paid tribute to the late Permanent Secretary Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, who played a vital role in the committee overseeing the discussions, and affirmed that their efforts would continue. Meanwhile, Aspen Medical Fiji CEO Gavin Whiteside confirmed that a second round of talks involving the government, Health Care Fiji, and Aspen Medical regarding the concession agreement is scheduled for this week.

This development demonstrates the government’s commitment to enhancing healthcare services in the region by ensuring that relevant stakeholders are included in essential discussions, ultimately aiming for improved health service delivery for the community.
