Fiji’s Health Minister Quashes IV Fluid Shortage Rumors: What’s The Real Story?

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health, Professor Biman Prasad, has dismissed recent media claims regarding a shortage of intravenous (IV) fluids in Fiji. He stated unequivocally that there is no current out-of-stock situation concerning IV fluids in the country, a statement aligned with previous assurances from the Ministry of Health & Medical Services.

Professor Prasad acknowledged the ongoing global issue with IV fluid shortages, expected to continue until 2025 due to supply constraints, but emphasized that the Ministry is actively ensuring adequate supplies for over 200 healthcare facilities across the nation. Last week, the Fiji Pharmaceutical & Biomedical Services (FPBS) received a shipment of 3,000 units of saline solution, with an additional 4,200 units awaiting clearance from the Fiji Procurement Office. Continuous orders for saline solutions have also been placed to secure necessary supplies in the coming days.

The Ministry’s records indicate that a small percentage of dengue fever cases may require hospitalization and subsequent treatment with IV fluids and platelets. However, the recent dengue outbreak has shown promising signs, with fewer severe cases reported, allowing most patients to be managed in Sub-Divisional healthcare facilities.

Additionally, Professor Prasad reassured the public that HIV medications are available and well stocked. He urged the Fiji Medical Association and the media to verify information before making public statements that could cause unnecessary alarm.

He reiterated the importance of maintaining personal health and contributing to community safety, particularly by cleaning surroundings to reduce the risk of dengue transmission. This proactive approach is part of an ongoing strategy to strengthen Fiji’s healthcare system amidst global supply chain challenges.

In light of the current healthcare landscape, there is a sense of optimism regarding the Ministry’s commitment to securing medical supplies and improving public health outcomes in Fiji. With continued efforts to strengthen procurement processes and manage supplies effectively, the potential exists for significant enhancements to the healthcare system’s resilience moving forward.
