Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad has issued a strong warning regarding Fiji’s escalating non-communicable disease (NCD) crisis, urging immediate action to avoid an unmanageable economic burden. Speaking at the launch of the Fiji Health Sector Review 2024 report, Prof Prasad emphasized the importance of public awareness about the health crisis facing the nation.

The report highlights the inadequate improvement in health outcomes in Fiji, calling for a significant annual investment of $50 million over the next 70 years to effectively tackle rising health issues, particularly NCDs. Prof Prasad noted that without early intervention, the costs associated with managing the health crisis could rise to nearly 7 percent of the country’s GDP.

Currently, Fiji’s health expenditure hovers around 4 percent of GDP, just below the World Health Organization’s recommended 4.5 percent. The Minister stressed the need for investment in healthcare now to prevent more severe costs in the future. He pointed out that while the situation is critical, existing efforts to enhance healthcare infrastructure, such as the renovation of the Nausori Health Centre, are already yielding positive outcomes.

“The Nausori Health Centre was previously in disrepair but now serves 70,000 people effectively,” Prof Prasad stated. He acknowledged that changes in the healthcare system would not occur overnight but indicated that progress is being made.

In summary, Fiji stands at a crucial point concerning its healthcare system, with significant investments needed to combat NCDs. However, there are signs of improvement already taking shape, suggesting a pathway toward better health outcomes and infrastructure in the country. This proactive stance from government officials reflects a hopeful commitment to reform and progress, focusing on the long-term health of the population.
