Fiji’s Health Crisis: HIV Surge Linked to Rising Cancer Cases

The Fiji Cancer Society has raised an alarm about the potential for increased cancer cases tied to the growing number of individuals living with HIV in the country. Alumita Bera, the Palliative Care Program Officer, noted that a compromised immune system due to HIV significantly weakens the body’s defenses against various diseases, including cancer. Following a declaration of an HIV outbreak by Minister for Health Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu, current statistics reveal 1,093 cases of HIV reported between January and September 2024.

Bera explained that the deterioration of the immune system makes individuals more susceptible to serious illnesses, with cancer being notably impacted by lifestyle choices, nutrition, and environmental factors. Even without a genetic predisposition, habits such as poor diet and smoking can elevate cancer risk.

This cautionary message from the Fiji Cancer Society is particularly pressing as late-stage cancer diagnoses are on the rise, largely driven by the hesitance of many HIV-positive individuals to engage in regular health screenings. This aligns with ongoing discussions concerning cancer in Fiji, where recent discussions have highlighted that breast cancer now surpasses gynecological cancers as the most prevalent form among women, representing a significant shift in health trends.

Amid increasing cancer cases, healthcare professionals are advocating for proactive public health interventions, including nutrition education and greater access to screenings. Such community-focused initiatives foster hope that with improved awareness and early detection, the health landscape in Fiji can see positive changes despite the current challenges. Focusing on lifestyle modifications and empowering individuals through education can aid in reducing both cancer and HIV-related complications in the future.
