The Diabetes Fiji Project Manager, Marawa Kini, is advocating for increased government funding to enhance the Ministry of Health’s research program aimed at addressing non-communicable diseases (NCDs). During a recent national budget consultation, Kini highlighted the significance of taxes imposed on sugary beverages, which serve as a vital revenue source for the government. He suggested that part of this revenue could be reinvested in local organizations collaborating with the Ministry of Health to strengthen initiatives aimed at combating NCDs.

Kini emphasized that many individuals affected by NCDs, particularly diabetes, face financial hardships. He proposed that subsidies could be introduced to make critical healthcare resources, such as glucometers and other medical supplies, more accessible to vulnerable communities.

In response, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad acknowledged the government’s ongoing collaboration with various NGOs and affirmed that funding for the Ministry of Health has not been lacking. He stated that the government appreciates the vital advocacy role these organizations play.

Professor Prasad also noted a concerning trend regarding the NCD crisis in Fiji, stressing the urgent need for immediate action in light of a report indicating that 80% of deaths in the country are due to NCDs, with significant financial implications if proactive measures are not taken. He highlighted previous government investments aimed at improving health infrastructure, such as the renovations at the Nausori Health Centre, which now serves a population of 70,000.

The situation underscores the urgent need for targeted investments in healthcare to manage the NCD crisis effectively. Despite the challenges, the discussions around budget allocations and health programs provide a hopeful outlook on Fiji’s commitment to improving public health and reducing the impact of NCDs on its population.

As Fiji navigates this health crisis, the combined efforts of the government, NGOs, and community initiatives could pave the way for better management of public health and economic stability moving forward.
