Fijians are facing significant health challenges that are hindering their productivity and well-being. This was emphasized by Stephen Ndegwa, the World Bank country director for Papua New Guinea and the Pacific Islands, during the launch of the Fiji Health Sector Review. He pointed out that the alarming rates of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer represent a “true epidemic” in the country.

Mr. Ndegwa stated that the incidence of NCDs in Fiji is nearly double that of other countries with similar economic standings. A staggering 80 percent of deaths in Fiji are attributed to these conditions, often affecting individuals at a younger age. This health crisis places immense strain on the health system, families, and the overall economy.

The report highlights a troubling stagnation in life expectancy in Fiji over the past 30 years, with only a modest increase from 66 to 68 years between 1990 and 2020. This progress pales in comparison to gains seen in other lower-income nations, which experienced a more substantial rise in life expectancy, improving by 15 percent during the same time frame. As a result, Fiji’s life expectancy now lags nearly nine years behind those countries, signaling a significant area for improvement.

Addressing these health issues could lead to greater productivity and improved economic outcomes for the nation, presenting a crucial opportunity for policy makers and health officials to invest in preventative health measures and education. By prioritizing health initiatives, Fiji can work towards closing this gap and enhancing the quality of life for its citizens.

In summary, Fiji is grappling with a health crisis that is affecting both its people and economy. The ongoing challenges posed by NCDs have underscored the urgent need for comprehensive health strategies to enhance life expectancy and overall public health, promising a pathway toward a healthier future for Fijians.
