Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad has asserted that Fiji must take decisive action to combat the pressing non-communicable disease (NCD) crisis, or risk facing an unsustainable economic burden. Speaking at the launch of the Fiji Health Sector Review 2024 report, Prasad urged the public to recognize the seriousness of the health crisis affecting the nation.

The report calls for a significant investment of $50 million annually for the next 70 years to effectively tackle Fiji’s health issues, particularly the escalating rates of NCDs. Prasad noted that without intervention, health expenditures could surge to nearly 7% of the GDP, far above the current 4% spending, which is just below the World Health Organization’s recommended 4.5%.

Prasad expressed concern about the alarming increase in NCD cases, emphasizing that early intervention is crucial to avert an even worse health crisis in the future. He highlighted the government’s recent initiatives to enhance healthcare infrastructure, such as the renovations at the Nausori Health Centre, which now adequately serves its community after being in disrepair.

Despite the daunting challenges ahead, Prasad remained optimistic, stating that positive progress is being made and that improvements take time. His remarks serve as a reminder of the importance of both government action and community awareness in fostering a healthier future for Fiji.

In summary, if Fiji does not urgently respond to its health crisis, it could face overwhelming costs related to NCDs. However, ongoing government efforts and investments showcase hope for a better healthcare system, promoting both physical well-being among citizens and economic stability moving forward.
