The Minister for Health and Medical Services, Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu, has called upon his ministry to optimize the newly secured funding of $611.6 million for the 2025-2026 National Budget, marking a notable increase from last year’s allocation of $540 million. Dr. Lalabalavu acknowledged the ministry’s request for an even larger budget but recognized the need to prioritize within the government’s broader fiscal framework.
He highlighted that while the additional funds will support essential healthcare programs, the investment in infrastructure and agriculture will indirectly benefit public health by improving the social determinants of health. Dr. Lalabalavu stressed the importance of effectively utilizing these funds to maximize their impact, stating, “We’ve been given that. Now to ensure the ministry capitalizes on utilising the budgetary allocation to its maximum capacity.”
Similar reports have indicated that the overall increase in the national budget aims to significantly enhance Fiji’s healthcare by improving public health infrastructure and medical services. An increase in the budget also reflects the government’s commitment to tackling pressing healthcare challenges, particularly as Fiji faces a rising incidence of non-communicable diseases.
The ongoing efforts to enhance healthcare facilities through strategic investments suggest a hopeful and proactive trajectory for Fiji’s healthcare system. With the allocation promises and a strong commitment from government officials, there is optimism for improved health outcomes and access to essential services for the population in the coming years.
