Fiji's Bold Move: Tackling Derelict Vessels for a Cleaner Harbour

Fiji’s Harbour Transformation: The Race to Remove Derelict Vessels

The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) is making strides in its efforts to clear Suva Harbour of derelict vessels, actively negotiating with three local companies to remove a total of 24 such vessels. According to MSAF’s CEO Joeli Cawaki, the harbour has identified 44 derelict vessels, and the removal process for these 24 is underway.

Cawaki highlighted the cooperation of vessel owners, noting that around 20 have responded positively to MSAF’s requests for removal. The authority is employing legal frameworks, including the Seaport Management Act and the Maritime Transport Act, to enforce the removal of these unfit vessels. MSAF is also taking into account that financial constraints have hindered owners from acting on their own, and is proactively working to provide solutions.

The companies involved in this initiative are Dayal’s Steel Pte Ltd, a Chinese company based in Nausori, and Tradelink Scraps (Fiji) Ltd, who are currently preparing the necessary sites and equipment for the removal operation. Once ready, MSAF will oversee the transfer of the derelict vessels to these firms for dismantling and recycling, which will not only help clean up the harbour but also contribute economically to the companies involved.

Despite lacking specific budget allocations for this project, MSAF is collaborating with various stakeholders, including Fiji Ports Ltd, Fiji Revenue and Customs Services, the Fiji Police Water Police, the Navy, as well as the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Transport. This collaborative, multi-agency approach aims to tackle both immediate and long-term issues related to derelict vessels.

Furthermore, the second phase of this initiative will address sunken wrecks, with support from international organizations such as UNESCAP. This reflects a broader commitment to environmental and maritime safety that extends beyond Fiji.

Overall, this initiative represents a significant and hopeful step toward enhancing Fiji’s marine environment. Through effective collaboration with both local and international partners, MSAF is paving the way for sustainable maritime practices that promise to benefit the region’s waters in the long term.
