Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, has attributed Fiji’s ongoing challenges—including inadequate health services and constant water supply issues—to the priorities and mismanagement of the previous government, specifically the FijiFirst administration. In a recent statement, he emphasized the disconnect between the claimed economic growth during their leadership and the deteriorating infrastructure conditions now evident across the nation.

Kamikamica challenged the opposition, particularly MP Parveen Kumar, to justify why the country is still grappling with severe infrastructural crises, such as failing hospitals and unsatisfactory water systems, despite assertions of economic progress. “They’ve had supposed growth happening, but it hasn’t coincided with what we’re seeing on the ground,” he said, underscoring a lack of essential investments in critical infrastructure.

He particularly pointed out the failure to improve plumbing systems and water delivery, despite new developments like the Viria Dam. “No planning, lack of prioritization, too much talk,” he remarked, illustrating the administration’s unfulfilled promised advancements.

Acknowledging the frustrations of the Fijian populace, Kamikamica urged patience, asserting that the coalition government is formulating long-term solutions to restore efficiency and efficacy across sectors. “We are focused on spending wisely to address the root causes of Fiji’s challenges,” he stated, promising that the government is committed to turning the situation around, albeit not instantaneously.

Meanwhile, criticisms from opposition members, including Kumar, highlight the need for the current government to stop attributing blame to its predecessors without appropriate evidence. Kumar previously noted the substantial advancements achieved under the Bainimarama administration, which saw Fiji transition into an upper-middle-income country while advocating for responsible fiscal strategies to alleviate rising living costs.

The ongoing discourse reflects a critical moment for Fijian politics, emphasizing the importance of accountability and effective governance. There is hope that ongoing pressure from both the public and opposition leaders can inspire the government to actively address the essential needs of Fiji’s citizens, fostering a responsive approach to improving the overall quality of life in the country.
