In a significant development towards social upliftment, 45 street dwellers in Fiji have initiated a transformative pathway at the Fiji National University (FNU) Namaka Campus, participating in the ‘Easter on the Park’ program launched by the Ministry of Youth and Sports. This pioneering initiative aims to provide the participants with practical skills training that will enhance their employability and help them rebuild their lives.
The launch event took place recently, and among those taking part are seven individuals pursuing barbering, 20 training as tour guides, and 18 focusing on baking and pastry-making. Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru expressed optimism regarding this venture, stating, “They are beginning a new chapter in their lives, gaining the skills they need to find jobs and build better futures.”
Minister Saukuru also mentioned plans for ongoing support, indicating that a safe house is in development to provide these individuals with a stable environment as they prepare for employment. He emphasized the government’s commitment to empowerment, declaring, “For too long, people like them were ignored, but your Coalition Government is changing that. We believe in second chances, and that everyone deserves hope and opportunity.”
This initiative aligns with previous government efforts aimed at uplifting marginalized communities across Fiji. Similar programs, like those offered by the Australian Pacific Training Coalition (APTC), have effectively provided training that empowers vulnerable groups through skills development and education. These endeavors not only fortify individual participants but also significantly benefit wider communities, embodying the belief that education and support are pivotal for positive change.
