The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) is currently reevaluating the list of price-controlled goods as part of an assessment of the grocery market. This review aims to determine whether there should be an expansion or reduction of the current list, with a strong emphasis on keeping essential items affordable for the Fijian population. Akeneta Vonoyauyau, the FCCC Manager for Pricing Policy and Planning, indicated that the review will also examine the impact of brand differentiation within controlled categories. She noted the significance of ensuring that essential goods remain accessible, stating, “What we are considering is whether we should exempt certain items that may not be needed by average consumers.”

This initiative aligns with ongoing efforts by the FCCC to safeguard consumer interests amidst rising living costs. Recent articles highlighted the need for tighter regulations due to concerns over excessive profit margins that potentially exploit consumers. Minister for Trade and SMEs Manoa Kamikamica has been vocal about the necessity for regulations to curb these abuses within the market, stressing that companies should not profit at the expense of the public.

The FCCC’s review of price-controlled goods is, therefore, not only a step towards ensuring market fairness but also a testament to its commitment to consumer protection during challenging economic times. With public input encouraged, this initiative represents an opportunity for community voices to shape a fairer pricing landscape, fostering hope for a more equitable market.

Overall, the FCCC’s proactive stance and commitment to addressing these critical issues could lead to improved conditions for consumers and a more stable economic environment.
