The launch of Fiji’s first green building, the Fijian Holdings Limited (FHL) Tower, has encountered further delays following a safety incident at the construction site that led to two injuries. Originally set to open next month, the project has now been postponed indefinitely.

On November 25, 2024, two workers were injured, reportedly suffering from flash burns, although FHL has not disclosed specific details about the incident. The 17-storey building, a flagship project for FHL, has been under construction for six years, during which it has faced numerous challenges, including setbacks due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In a statement, FHL expressed their concern for the injured workers and their families, emphasizing the company’s commitment to safety. “FHL Tower is currently an active construction site under the management of the main contractor,” the company said. They intend to collaborate closely with contractors and authorities to ensure safety standards are met.

The decision to postpone the building’s opening reflects a dedication to prioritizing safety and maintaining high standards. FHL plans to continue updating shareholders with further information as it becomes available. Despite the current setbacks, Fijian Holdings Limited, a fully indigenous organization, has seen success in capital raising efforts, with their $30 million bond oversubscribed by over $1 million in 2022.

Though the delay is disappointing, it demonstrates FHL’s commitment to ensuring a safe environment for workers and the community. Hopefully, with these safety measures in place, the project can proceed smoothly once the situation stabilizes.

In summary, the FHL Tower has been postponed due to safety concerns following an incident that caused injuries to two workers, but the company remains committed to safety and efficient updates for stakeholders.
