Energy Fiji Limited has established an ambitious goal to ensure that at least 90 percent of its energy needs come from renewable sources by 2035. Acting Chief Executive Bobby Naimawi stated that the company is focused on identifying and developing various sustainable and economically feasible projects to reach this target.
One such initiative is the Namosi Hydro-electric project, which is currently undergoing a feasibility study. Preliminary investigations have indicated that multiple small hydro-electric schemes could be viable in the Namosi region, building on past research.
According to Naimawi, the future steps will depend on the feasibility study’s outcomes. This study will explore three potential hydro-power sites in Namosi along with the necessary high-voltage infrastructure to transport power to larger electricity demand areas.
The feasibility study will evaluate the technical possibilities, economic viability, and the environmental and social implications of the proposed hydro facilities and infrastructure. Initiated in 2024, the study is projected to take about two years and will be conducted in two phases:
Phase 1 involves a scoping and options analysis, which examines various project scenarios and arrangements. Phase 2 will focus on a selection of potential projects, including detailed technical, environmental, and social assessments.
The feasibility study aims to determine the impacts of the hydro-power scheme in compliance with international standards, considering both social and economic benefits. Naimawi emphasized that the study will strive to avoid flooding populated or culturally significant areas and ensure that existing communities are not displaced due to the hydro-power initiatives.
The feasibility work is being carried out by consultants funded by development partners, who are collaborating closely with stakeholders to engage those affected before projects are developed. Naimawi noted that the findings from this study will play a crucial role in shaping Fiji’s renewable energy strategy as outlined in the National Development Plan.
