Fiji’s Green Challenge: Will 30 Million Trees Thrive?

The Forestry Ministry of Fiji has allocated $10 million to its ambitious “30 Million Trees in 15 Years” initiative, resulting in the planting of approximately 19 million trees across the country. Despite this progress, the ministry faces a significant challenge, as the survival rate of these newly planted trees is currently only 45 percent.

Forestry Minister Alitia Bainivalu attributed this low survival rate to degraded landscapes and difficulties in cultivating indigenous species. It’s noteworthy that the survival rate figure does not include mahogany and pine plantations. To address these challenges, the ministry has taken measures to optimize its reforestation efforts. Bainivalu announced a reduction in planting area from 1,800 hectares to 600 hectares, which will enable more focused follow-up activities and better monitoring of survival rates in these specific areas.

In line with enhancing the chances of success, the ministry has been conducting soil tests in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture over the past three years. These tests facilitate the assessment of environmental conditions, ensuring that native trees are planted in suitable soil pH levels, which is crucial for their growth and longevity.

Building on its current endeavors, the ministry is evaluating its progress and plans to submit a budget request for the next fiscal year, depending on the number of trees planted in the current year. The proactive initiatives being taken by the Forestry Ministry reflect a commitment to improving Fiji’s reforestation landscape, focusing not only on quantity but also on the sustainable success of these plantings.

These strategic efforts resonate with Fiji’s broader environmental goals, offering hope for better conservation practices that contribute positively to biodiversity and the fight against climate change. The inclusion of community involvement in these initiatives is expected to bolster the effectiveness of planting efforts, ensuring that both environmental sustainability and community needs are addressed for a resilient future.
