Two prominent traditional leaders in Fiji, Ratu Suliano Matanitobua, the Turaga na Tui Namosi, and Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba, the Turaga na Tui Nayau, have been appointed as deputy chairpersons of the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC). Their nominations were endorsed by the traditional confederacies of Burebasaga and Tovata, with the Kubuna confederacy also supporting their appointment.
The official announcement took place during the commencement of the GCC meeting at Draiba, which featured a ceremonial presentation of a kamunaga (whale’s tooth) by the iTaukei Affairs Board, symbolizing the council’s commitment to serving the iTaukei people. The council members were reminded of their significant responsibility in representing the interests of their communities.
During the meeting, the council reviewed key recommendations related to the Department of Consultation, Waterways, and Customary Fishing Grounds. There was also a focus on paying tribute to former council members, including the late Ratu Meli Saukuru and Ratu Inoke Takiveikata, underlining the importance of honoring the legacies of past leaders.
The ongoing deliberations reflect a renewed vigor within the GCC as it seeks to enhance its role in modern Fiji, addressing various socio-economic challenges facing the iTaukei community. As highlighted by Ratu Suliano in previous discussions, there is a growing trend among council members to engage more proactively in addressing these issues, showing a shift towards a more inclusive environment where all voices are heard.
The GCC meeting not only marks a significant moment in the governance structure of the iTaukei people but also indicates a hopeful trajectory for their future, as unity and collaboration among chiefs can lead to meaningful advancements. This optimistic outlook emphasizes the importance of dialogue, representation, and the continuation of Fijian cultural heritage in shaping the path forward.
