The Fiji Labour Party has expressed strong support for Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s recent actions following the recommendations from the Commission of Inquiry (COI). Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry praised the Prime Minister’s decision to suspend FICAC Commissioner Barbara Malimali and dismiss Attorney General Graham Leung, viewing these moves as essential steps toward restoring integrity within the government.
Chaudhry emphasized that while these actions are a positive start, Rabuka must continue to address the deeper issues stemming from Malimali’s controversial appointment as FICAC Commissioner last July. He stated, “This is a step in the right direction, but the PM has a long way to go to thoroughly clean up ‘the rot.’” Chaudhry insists that the Prime Minister’s commitment to good governance and the rule of law must be unwavering, reflecting the expectations of the public.
Moreover, Chaudhry pointed out that there are other officials within the Cabinet and the judicial system who have been implicated in the COI report, and he hopes they will also face appropriate consequences.
The Prime Minister’s proactive response comes amidst concerns raised by Army Commander Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai about the need for transparency regarding the COI report. Chaudhry and other party members have underscored the importance of addressing the public’s demand for accountability and ethical standards in governance.
This bold action by Prime Minister Rabuka signals a hopeful turning point for Fiji, with opportunities to rebuild trust in its institutions and affirm a commitment to transparency and ethical governance. It reflects a critical moment where leadership can foster a more accountable political landscape for Fiji’s future.
