Small businesses play a crucial role in the economy of Fiji, contributing 18% to the country’s GDP and providing employment for 60% of the workforce. The government acknowledges the significance of these enterprises and has reiterated its support for National Small and Medium Enterprises (NSMEs), which are key to achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Recently, an encouraging initiative was launched to empower local entrepreneurs. Four business owners from Lamini Village in Taveuni were presented with a ‘Grant Agreement’ by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Co-operatives, Small and Medium Enterprises, and Communications, Manoa Kamikamica. This grant, provided through the Ministry’s Trade Enhancement Programme, is designed to aid in the growth and development of their roadside businesses.
This initiative demonstrates the government’s ongoing commitment to enhance small enterprises and promote economic growth in rural areas, showcasing a supportive environment for entrepreneurs to thrive and contribute to the community’s overall prosperity.
