Fiji’s Government Faces Credibility Challenge Amid Inquiry Controversy

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced that the cabinet will present a document regarding the ‘Investigation’ or the ‘Commission of Inquiry’ into allegations made by former Deputy Commissioner of FICAC, Francis Puleiwai.

In comments to the press, Rabuka explained that the document outlines the ‘Terms of Reference’ and specific objectives for the Commission members, which will be reviewed by the Cabinet.

He emphasized that this matter pertains to the credibility of the Government and its institutions, highlighting the need for all issues to be thoroughly addressed. Rabuka acknowledged that while the past cannot be changed, the Government must ensure that similar actions do not occur in the future.

“If anyone has violated orders, laws, or regulations, they will face appropriate consequences,” he stated.

When asked about Puleiwai’s claims of being targeted by government agents, the Prime Minister responded that such actions could not be attributed to his administration. He encouraged Puleiwai to file a complaint with the Police if she feels unsafe in Fiji and confirmed that she is welcome to return to the country.

Rabuka also noted that a report related to Puleiwai’s claims was retracted by ABC due to questions surrounding its credibility. He reassured all Fijians that their safety is a priority.
