Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has publicly confirmed that he has not yet received a letter from Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai, the Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, concerning the Commission of Inquiry (COI) report. However, he acknowledged that Major General Kalouniwai did submit a letter to Minister for Defence, Pio Tikoduadua.

Mr. Tikoduadua, a member of the National Security and Defence Council along with Major General Kalouniwai, stated that the Commander’s correspondence emphasized the significance of upholding the 2013 Constitution and advised the Government to proceed with caution on related matters. He stated that the opinions presented by the Commander are currently under review on his desk, expressing that he has not made a decision regarding the next steps but will do so in due time.

This recent correspondence coincides with an ongoing narrative in Fiji where there are heightened discussions about governance, accountability, and transparency, especially concerning high-level appointments and potential political interference. Previous articles have highlighted similar sentiments regarding the investigation into the suspended FICAC Commissioner Barbara Malimali, reinforcing the need for ethical governance and public trust.

The ongoing scrutiny of governance within Fiji has led to hopes that these inquiries could usher in substantial reforms aimed at enhancing transparency and accountability across governmental operations. Citizens are optimistic that the deliberations surrounding such inquiries will foster a more trustworthy political atmosphere and reinforce the integrity of public service.

With the current focus on adherence to legal principles and governmental integrity, there is a sense of momentum towards a more proactive governance strategy that could positively impact Fiji’s political landscape in the future.
