Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has acknowledged his inclusion in the recently released Commission of Inquiry (COI) report concerning the appointment of Barbara Malimali as the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). This development was discussed during a media briefing where Rabuka confirmed he and his three Deputy Prime Ministers convened to deliberate on the findings of the report and broader budget matters.

Originally set to take place after a Tuesday Cabinet meeting, the discussion was postponed due to the Prime Minister’s commitments in the West. While Rabuka refrained from revealing specific details from the report, he committed to acting on its recommendations, which include forwarding the findings to both the police and FICAC for further investigation. He noted that the complete report can be made public once certain sections, particularly Chapter 7, are appropriately redacted.

The inquiry was prompted by serious concerns regarding the legality of Malimali’s appointment, a matter of significant public interest as it underscores ongoing demands for transparency within governance, particularly regarding high-level appointments at FICAC. Previous discussions highlighted that the inquiry aims to restore public trust in governmental operations and ensure ethical governance standards are upheld.

This situation represents a pivotal opportunity for Fiji to advance its political landscape. Many citizens express hope that the findings of this inquiry will lead to meaningful reforms, fostering a governance framework characterized by integrity and accountability.

The anticipation around the outcomes of this COI not only aims to address the specific issues surrounding Malimali’s appointment but could also signal a broader commitment to enhancing transparency within Fiji’s government, which is crucial for rebuilding the citizens’ trust in public institutions.
