Only President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu and Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka currently possess the full, unredacted version of the Commission of Inquiry (COI) report into Barbara Malimali’s appointment as Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). This was confirmed by Counsel Assisting the COI, Janet Mason, who noted that two versions of the report were submitted: a full version and a redacted one, the latter containing certain information blacked out.

Mason stated, “I can’t see how anyone can have copies because only two copies were made of the initial version, one for the President and one for the Prime Minister.” While the public has been eagerly awaiting the release of the findings, a formal decision on the public release of the redacted version has not been made yet, although Mason expressed hope that it would eventually be shared: “I would be surprised if the redacted version was not released.”

Prime Minister Rabuka indicated that he is waiting for legal advice before disclosing any details regarding the report. The anticipation surrounding this report underscores its significance in Fiji’s political landscape. The outcome of the inquiry may hold the key to vital reforms aimed at improving governance and accountability in the country’s institutions.

In previous statements, Rabuka emphasized the importance of transparency in this process, which aims to bolster public trust in governmental operations amid concerns regarding potential issues related to Malimali’s appointment. The inquiry has already engaged numerous witnesses, demonstrating its commitment to thoroughly examining the legitimacy of high-level appointments.

As the public and political leaders alike await clarity on the findings, there is a hopeful sentiment that this inquiry can lead to meaningful reforms, paving the way for a renewed commitment to ethical governance in Fiji. The potential positive implications of the inquiry’s conclusions for institutional integrity and accountability are eagerly anticipated by many citizens.
