The Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, has confirmed that funds are available to reward all athletes who secure a podium finish at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. The Fiji 7s team is set to receive a cash prize of $20,000 for each player, as well as for coaches and management, after winning silver in Paris.
In a prior announcement, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka stated that the cash rewards for the Olympics would be $50,000 for a gold medal, $20,000 for silver, and $10,000 for bronze. When queried about the government’s financial capabilities, Saukuru responded affirmatively, stating, “of course yes.”
Plans for celebrations are in progress; however, the Fiji 7s team will have to wait until all teams return, including those still competing in France. Saukuru mentioned, “We will wait for all the teams to come back… and when they return, we will decide on the celebration for those that win medals.” He also informed the men’s rugby team in the changing room after their final match against France that the government will maintain its promise and award them $20,000 each.
Saukuru was present in Nadi to welcome both the Fiji 7s men’s and women’s teams upon their return from Paris.
