The Western Division is being considered as a potential host for a leg of the HSBC SVNS Series in Fiji. Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, expressed this optimistic prospect when discussed with The Fiji Times about the ministry’s capacity to facilitate the logistics of hosting such a significant sporting event.

Saukuru emphasized the importance of infrastructure development, noting that the establishment of an international ground capable of accommodating more than 20,000 spectators would be essential. He acknowledged that while hosting a series of this magnitude would be a considerable challenge, it could be viable if the necessary accommodations and facilities are provided.

His comments align with the ongoing discussions in the Fijian rugby community regarding infrastructure requirements, echoed by Fiji Rugby Union CEO, Rovereto Nayacalevu. He reiterated the need for proper venues and essential services, such as proximity to hospitals and airports, to meet World Rugby’s stringent hosting criteria. Nayacalevu highlighted efforts to upgrade local stadiums, including plans to expand the HFC Bank Stadium’s capacity from 15,000 to 25,000 by 2026.

These infrastructural upgrades are crucial as Fiji seeks to bolster its candidacy to host international rugby events. Several international rugby players, including Matai Leuta and Rosko Speckman, have championed Fiji’s hosting aspirations, citing the nation’s rich rugby heritage and passionate fan base.

The excitement surrounding events like the Coral Coast Sevens showcases Fiji’s rugby culture and proves beneficial in strengthening its case as a deserving host for a World Sevens Series leg. The ongoing community engagement and infrastructure development signify a hopeful outlook for rugby in Fiji, paving the way for increased global recognition of its vibrant sporting scene.

In summary, with dedicated efforts towards infrastructure and community involvement, Fiji is positioning itself as a strong candidate for hosting significant international rugby events, contributing to a brighter future for the sport in the region.
