The Fiji Labour Party (FLP) has called on Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to launch an investigation into a troubling case regarding the attempted smuggling of gold concentrate from Fiji without the necessary approvals. This situation also encompasses the examination of taxes, royalties, and proper certifications in line with the Mining Regulation.

FLP Leader Mahendra Chaudhry raised concerns about around 600-700 tonnes of gold ore concentrate that are currently being held in a haulage yard in Lautoka, awaiting export clearance. He stated these containers had been unlawfully moved from Vatukoula and stressed that mining regulations require prior approval from the Director of Mines before any materials, particularly gold and gold ore, are transported from mining sites.

Chaudhry criticized Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Filimoni Vosarogo, for allegedly neglecting the strict approval processes before transporting the ore to Lautoka. He questioned how such a significant quantity of gold concentrate was allowed to move without the Director of Mines’ endorsement, suggesting that those involved acted unlawfully.

In response, Minister Vosarogo defended his position, claiming that all protocols were adhered to and asserting that no illegal export activities had taken place. He noted that Vatukoula Gold Mines Limited (VGML) had expressed a desire to export the concentrates, but the necessary documentation for approval had not yet been submitted to the Director of Mines.

This incident sheds light on significant issues surrounding governance and transparency in Fiji’s mining industry, especially the implications of exporting gold ore concentrates instead of more valuable refined gold bars, which yield higher returns through foreign exchange and taxation.

The FLP’s demand for an investigation serves as an opportunity for both the government and the opposition to promote transparency and accountability in managing Fiji’s mineral resources. Adhering diligently to mining regulations is crucial to safeguard the country’s resources while balancing economic growth and community needs. This challenge highlights the significance of responsible governance in fostering sustainable practices that benefit both the economy and local populations.
