The annual Girmit Open Golf Tournament, sponsored by Extra Supermarket, is slated for May 10–11 at the Fiji Golf Club, showcasing a prize pool of around $30,000. Now in its fourth year, this 36-hole event attracts both professional and amateur golfers across the nation.

Extra Supermarket, the main sponsor since 2022, has renewed its commitment with over $20,000 in sponsorship, which includes $15,000 dedicated to cash prizes for professional participants. Other sponsors include the Fiji Professional Golf Association and several private contributors.

Satya Shandil, Chairman of the Organising Committee, emphasized the vital role of Extra’s support in upholding the tournament’s high standards and promoting golf throughout Fiji. “Entries are coming from every club and district. We are very pleased with the response,” he remarked.

Dhiraj Singh from Extra Supermarket expressed pride in investing in sports like golf, which fosters community engagement and national unity. The Girmit Open Golf Championships, first held in 2021, not only encourage sporting excellence but also promote awareness of the Girmitiyas’ significant history in Fiji. Notably, the Fijian Government has declared Girmit Day a public holiday in May to honor this legacy.

This event not only emphasizes the competitive spirit among golfers but also strengthens community bonds, as local businesses and organizations unite to celebrate and support the sport. With the continued backing of dedicated sponsors like Extra Supermarket, the future of golf in Fiji looks bright.

The growing participation in such events reflects a broader trend of engagement in golfing across the islands, fostering a positive atmosphere for the sport’s development in the region.
